Japan’s Food Products Imported Acts for Consumer Safety

1. Food Sanitation Act

The Food Sanitation Act was used to manage food and beverage safety in Japan, targeting to take care of the Japanese population’s health. This Act is in charge by the Ministry of Health, Labor, and Welfare.

2. Act on Domestic Animal and Aquatics Animals Infectious Disease Control

This Act is controlled by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, which related to preventing infectious disease in livestock that covers the Government Ordinance for Enforcement of the Act on Domestic Animal Infectious Diseases Control (Government Ordinance No. 235, 1953) and the list of monitored infectious disease for both livestock and aquatic animals.

3. Plant Protection Act

The Plant Protection Act is also legislated by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries, which is similar to the Act on Domestic Animal Infectious Disease Control but focuses on plants.

4. Food Labeling Act

The Food Labeling Act is the regulation for labeling food products properly, supporting and protecting consumer health to ensure that food products are safe to consume. It provides information for consumer consideration to buy or not. This Act was under the Consumer Affairs Agency; CAA), and from this regulation, imported food must declare this information clearly.
